Description
Over the last several years, we have been confronted with tragic events and global social movements that have compelled us to have difficult but important conversations about who gets to participate in science and knowledge production, and on what terms. In response, institutions have made commitments—some bold, some symbolic—to address exclusion and
expand participation. The tides are shifting just back already, as we are currently witnessing a strong backlash against these efforts, with diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives facing growing skepticism, political resistance, and even rollbacks. What does this moment mean for those committed to broadening participation in science? How do we navigate these shifting
winds without losing sight of the core principles of equity, excellence, and innovation?

In her remarks, Dr. Alpha Abebe will speak to members of the Perimeter Institute about the unique position they occupy in global knowledge production and the responsibilities that come with it. She will provoke the community to think critically and honestly about the power they hold, the barriers that remain, and what meaningful engagement with underrepresented communities truly looks like. Are current efforts simply repackaging old power dynamics? How do we move beyond performative gestures and political flashpoints to focus on real impact? Ultimately, how can we ensure that the pursuit of knowledge remains open to the broadest
possible range of thinkers, ideas, and perspectives?
