DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Alpha Abebe (McMaster University)\n\nOver the last s
everal years\, we have been confronted with tragic events and global socia
l movements that have compelled us to have difficult but important conver
sations about who gets to participate in science and knowledge production
\, and on what terms. In response\, institutions have made commitments—
some bold\, some symbolic—to address exclusion and\nexpand participation
. The tides are shifting just back already\, as we are currently witnessin
 g a strong backlash against these efforts\, with diversity\, equity\, and
inclusion initiatives facing growing skepticism\, political resistance\,
and even rollbacks. What does this moment mean for those committed to br
oadening participation in science? How do we navigate these shifting\nwind
s without losing sight of the core principles of equity\, excellence\, and
innovation? \n \nIn her remarks\, Dr. Alpha Abebe will speak to members
of the Perimeter Institute about the unique position they occupy in glob
al knowledge production and the responsibilities that come with it. She w
ill provoke the community to think critically and honestly about the power
they hold\, the barriers that remain\, and what meaningful engagement wi
th underrepresented communities truly looks like. Are current efforts sim
ply repackaging old power dynamics? How do we move beyond performative ge
stures and political flashpoints to focus on real impact? Ultimately\, ho
w can we ensure that the pursuit of knowledge remains open to the broadest
 \npossible range of thinkers\, ideas\, and perspectives?\n\nhttps://events
