Description
The most massive component of an L* galaxy is its hot, diffuse, extended circumgalactic medium (CGM). We now understand that the CGM is the key to understand galaxy formation and evolution. I will present our work on the observations of the Milky Way highlighting new discoveries that provide us insights into the thermal history and chemical enrichment of the CGM. I will also discuss detecting the CGM of external galaxies in X-rays in both absorption and emission. Time permitting, I will discuss attempts to detect the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM).
